Security at Brechin Golf Club has been stepped up in the wake of several thefts that led to equipment stolen from their premises being thrown from the town’s bypass on to the A90 Dundee to Aberdeen dual carriageway in one case causing a potentially devastating accident.
A bus sustained extensive damage to its roof and a smashed skylight around 8pm on Saturday, January 15, when signs with metal spikes attached to them were thrown from the flyover into its path.
The incident, which was originally reported to Lothian and Borders police by the Edinburgh bus company, happened around the same time police discovered several rakes that had been reported missing from the club strewn across the busy dual carriageway.
Officers from Tayside are now working on the belief the two incidents are related and will patrol the golf club in an attempt to catch the thieves in the act.
Stephen Rennie, who manages the club, described the actions of those involved as “absolute madness” and admitted he was amazed no-one travelling on the bus was more badly hurt.”
He said, “I think it’s a case of the same culprits coming back and trying their luck. They’re just grabbing anything they can get their hands on.
“We’ve obviously put the rakes away but the metal signs were just there to advise the golfers that the ground was under repair.
“I think it’s probably kids, but I can’t believe people would do this. It’s lucky nobody was killed.
“Security is going to be a lot tighter now and we’re getting cameras installed. We’re doing all we can.”
A police spokeswoman said, “Whenever anybody throws anything from a flyover, they are looking at causing a serious road accident, if not a fatality.
“There is a high chance that these two incidents are connected, so I would ask anyone with any information to come forward.”
