A budding Angus rally driver has given The Courier’s Fight For Fairer Fuel campaign his backing as he prepares for his first stage rally.
James Clark (46), from Carnoustie, will travel to Inverness this weekend to take part in the Snowman Rally but both he and navigator Paul Orchiston (40), from Liff, admit it is an increasingly expensive hobby.
James, who works in sales for Cadbury by day, began to spectate at rallies 25 years ago and has since “had a hankering to actually go out and do one.”
But as he gears up for the event which will see him and Paul travel almost 200 miles around the Highlands he is contemplating fuel bills in excess of £200.
Speaking from Errol airfield as he squeezed in some final training before the long trip north, James said he “very much supported” our campaign to have the UK government introduce a fuel duty regulator to stop prices at the pumps spiralling out of control.
He said, “It’s getting quite costly and I only run on standard fuel. Some racing cars run on special high-octane fuel, which is even worse.”
James also admitted that soaring petrol costs were the talk of his Cadbury colleagues UK-wide.
“In my day job as a sales rep, I have to drive around quite a lot and it’s the same all over the country for different companies. A lot of people have been talking about how high fuel prices are and that’s got to hit companies in the UK hard.”If you want to support the Courier’s call for a fuel duty regulator, click here to add your name to our petition.
