Carnoustie Tyres’ business deflated by sewerage works

Trade at a Carnoustie garage has been driven down since roadworks got underway directly in front of the premises.

Staff at Carnoustie Tyres, on Barry Road, said they have seen a noticeable fall in the number of customers since the sewerage works began last Monday.

Co-owner Angus Neil said, “People are driving through the traffic lights and getting stuck in a big queue. It is taking them two light changes to get through the lights so they are thinking, ‘to hell with that, I’m not waiting,’ and carrying on to find somewhere else to get their car fixed.”

Mr Neil added that customers may be unaware they are still open. “People who live here are not using that road, so they are going into Dundee or the next town to get their cars fixed if there is anything wrong.

“It is affecting us already and it is worrying because they will be here for a while yet. I don’t think there will be any chance of compensation.

“People just don’t realise we are still open for business as usual. We have put signs at both sides of the temporary traffic lights to let people know we are still up and we just hope things get better soon.”

A Scottish Water spokesman said the work will help provide a better service for people living in the town.

“This work will ensure the security of service to customers in this area,” he said. “Work will be completed in mid March.

“This project and its traffic management have been strategically planned in conjunction with Angus Council in order to keep disruption to a minimum.”
