Arbroath’s popular music festival starts this week for its 79th year running, with organisers delighted by the tally of entries.
Youngsters will compete in an array of classes when the Arbroath and District Musical (Competitive) Festival begins on Wednesday.
A new class for Angus primary school choirs has been introduced to meet the changing situation regarding visiting specialist music teachers to schools.
Executive committee chairwoman Sheena Guthrie said, “This class has proved very popular, with eight schools participating. We have also been fortunate in the presentation of a trophy for this new class from St Thomas RC Primary School, Arbroath, in memory of Loraine Cant who, for many years, tutored children for their appearance at our festival.
“Loraine was also well-known in many other musical circles in the town.”
Mrs Cant sadly died of cancer a few years ago and headteacher Lesley Hood and the organisers felt this was a fitting memorial for her contributions to music.
Schools participating in this year’s festival have also been helped by Stagecoach chief Brian Soutar, who has provided transport for the choirs.
The four-day event culminates on Saturday, March 12, with the announcement of several awards including the Blue Riband. Tickets can be bought in advance at the Webster Memorial Theatre box office.
