Work has begun on a long-awaited footpath and cycleway in Angus costing £229,000.
The route between Montrose and the Northwater Viaduct will create a dedicated off-road combined path, paid for by Angus Council, Sustrans and Angus Environmental Trust.
Running from Broomfield in Montrose through the former airfield and land at Kinnaber, the pathway will link with the southern end of the viaduct.
The cycleway then follows the public road to St Cyrus and will form part of the designated Sustrans national cycle route and the North Sea cycle route. Montrose Councillor David May, head of Angus Council’s infrastructure service committee, said, “I am personally very enthusiastic about this project because, as a member of the community council, I have been campaigning to have it done for several years.
“The work should be completed within the next three months in time for the summer season and it will be a big advantage for cyclists not to have to go on to the road and contend with traffic.”
It has been estimated the route will cost £1760 annually to maintain.
