A young mum who helped her son to beat cancer has died of the disease.
Angus woman Hayley Cameron died on Saturday after a two-year battle against throat cancer.
The tragedy has devastated the 33-year-old’s teenage son, Joshua, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma when he was five.
Dundee University graduate Hayley, who was raised in Auchmithie, died while being watched over by her mother, Angela Pieroni, who now becomes main guardian for both Joshua, 14, and his 13-year-old brother Jamie.
Hayley had to take a year out of her English degree when Joshua was diagnosed nine years ago.
She saw him make a full recovery after receiving treatment at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.
Shortly after graduating in 2012 and with hopes of pursuing a career as an English teacher, Hayley received her own cancer diagnosis after going to the doctor about a pain in her throat.
Despite receiving radiotherapy, chemotherapy and a neck dissection the cancer spread and last October she was told it was terminal.
Her mother, who had been caring for her daughter for the past year, praised her for fighting the disease to the very end.
She said: “We are a very close-knit family and we are all devastated.
“She was an amazing person who had a very bright future ahead of her.”
Hayley moved to Glasgow last year and her mother relocated to look after her.
Angela will now stay there to look after her grandsons.
