A councillor has expressed disappointment that an Angus beach pavilion is now surplus to council requirements.
Councillors today approved a plan to market the boarded-up main pavilion at Links Parade in Carnoustie for lease or sale.
The pavilion has been leased to the Carnoustie Yacht and Rugby Club since November 1993 but the rugby club has recently found alternative premises.
Councillor Brian Boyd said he was disappointed that the council plans to sell a building which overlooks the controversial new £250,000 cafe before the paint dries on its extension.
The cafe revamp, approved by councillors last year without a business plan or prospective occupant, was described as either a “serendipitous” development or a “pet project” by some elected members.
Mr Boyd said: “The project costs for the cafe are now over a staggering £300,000 so, as you can imagine, I am most disappointed that as the paint dries on this extension the council now plans to sell another that overlooks it.
“Like in Glasgow, the Commonwealth ‘feelgood’ factor in Carnoustie will certainly be diminishing now that residents see that this extension, rather than being a legacy for the town, is now a liability.
“The dark cloud of uncertainty that hangs over the iconic and beautiful beach pavilion will not help improve this feelgood factor.”
