Arbroath Swimming Pool has been closed for the second time in less than a month after a potentially dangerous bug was once again found in the water.
Angus Council issued a statement on Tuesday night stating that water samples at the Arbroath Sports Centre pool had again identified the presence of the cryptosporidium. As a result, the pool has been closed to the public and further tests will be carried out in a few days.
The statement made no mention as to whether anyone had reported feeling unwell after swimming at the centre.
Late last month an investigation was launched by Angus Council and NHS Tayside after a small number of people had presented with symptoms of the painful disease caused by the parasitic organism. Inquiries established that some of them had used the Arbroath pool in the days before they took ill.
The facility stayed closed while remedial work was carried out and further tests confirmed that it was free of the bug.
Cryptosporidium is spread through contact with infected food, water and animals. While most cases are mild, the bug can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and a slight fever. However, it can also produce a severe illness in people whose immune systems are compromised.
Anyone diagnosed with cryptosporidium should not use swimming pools until two weeks after symptoms cleared. To contact our reporter please phone01382 575896 or email angus@thecourier.co.uk.
