Tourism chiefs have come up with a new plan to encourage the Chinese to get their tongue around the famous Arbroath smokie.
The Angus delicacy may have hard-won EU geographic protection, but so far it does not have its own Mandarin name.
Alongside attractions including Glen Coe and the Queen’s Highland hideaway of Balmoral Castle, the smoked haddock treat is now on a list of 23 great Scottish icons that are to be renamed by Chinese fans.
VisitBritain’s Great Names for Great Britain campaign is the national body’s largest-ever marketing drive in China, with potential visitors being invited to rename over 100 attractions and icons.
In China, it is popular to give favourite locations, things and even celebrities names that are a literal description of what people think of them.
Chinese visitors to the UK are to find Mandarin names for some of the country’s best-loved places, events and products.
Angus councillor Bob Spink said: “The suggestion that it becomes recognised and named in Mandarin is yet another milestone in the delicacy’s progress to deserved fame.”
