An enormous model of Tower Bridge made out of Meccano sold for double its estimate at auction in Montrose.
The 264cm mechanised model was part of the collection of award-winning model maker Bobby Middlemass.
Bobby, 84, and his wife Jenny are downsizing from their farmhouse in Aberfeldy so decided to sell some of his larger Meccano pieces.
The Tower Bridge sold for £240, a Glasgow Coronation Mk I tram car reached £360 and a steam engine went under the hammer for £220 at Taylor’s Auctions.
Auctioneer Jonathan Taylor said the lots had attracted a great deal of interest.
He said: “They are spectacular items. The sheer scale means they don’t come on the market that often.
“Whether they have been interested in Meccano and toys or not, people have been wandering along and stopping to look at these models.
“It was an enormous amount of work to create them. We were pleased with the sale of all the Meccano items all sold well above the guide prices, which were quite conservative.
“There were two people who bought the pieces, though a lot of bids had been left and there were a few bids in a room.”
The Tower Bridge, which is 74cm high, took more than five months to complete and contains thousands of parts.
It is in perfect proportion to the London landmark.
Although Bobby played with Meccano as a child, it was not until he retired in the mid-1980s that he took up the hobby seriously.
He said his models started to get bigger and bigger and once he had completed the Tower Bridge he could not bear to take it apart again.
