A Tayside railway worker who spent much of his life as an ardent union supporter has died after a period of illness.
He was 85. Donald Morrison worked for many years at Tayside Council and Arbroath Town Council and has been described as a “stalwart” of National and Local Government Officers Association (Nalgo) and then Unison.
Mr Morrison held various posts within both unions and after retirement was treasurer of the Perth and Kinross retired members’ branch.
He was born at Knock in Banffshire and attended Ternemny Primary School and Keith Grammar before joining the Great North East Railways as a clerk.
He served a period of National Service in Malaysia and returned to railways at Huntly on completion.
This was where he met his wife-to-be, Barbara.
In 1966, the Morrisons moved to Arbroath and Mr Morrison took up a post with the town council, whereupon he became involved with Nalgo and subsequently Unison.
With regionalisation of local authorities in the 1970s, he moved to Tayside House.
The couple moved to Methven prior to Mr Morrison’s retirement in the early 1990s, where they both enjoyed creating an extensive garden.
