Education chiefs will invite teachers to apply for a top Tayside school job while the incumbent is investigated over alleged improper behaviour.
Arbroath High School’s headteacher Gillian Rew, 47, was the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal following allegations of drunken behaviour at a school trip.
The former depute rector of Morgan Academy in Dundee was suspended and did not return to her post after the Angus schools’ autumn holiday.
And the council will canvass senior teachers to find an acting replacement as the investigation is taking “significantly longer” than anticipated.
Thanking parents and staff for their “forbearance” over the last three months, people director Margo Williamson said interviews will take place towards the end of next month.
She said: “As you are aware, Doreen Redfern, the headteacher of Arbroath Academy has, since October, been acting as interim headteacher at Arbroath High School.
“This is due to the continuing suspension of a senior member of staff at the high school. It is clear the investigation into allegations, leading to the suspension, is taking significantly longer than was anticipated.
“As such, until all matters relating to this can be resolved, I consider it appropriate to move to appoint an acting headteacher to provide a longer-term arrangement for Arbroath High School.
“At the beginning of next term, I intend to invite notes of interest from all Angus Council depute headteachers to be interviewed for the acting position.”
The allegations surfaced after a sixth-year trip to Lockerbie in September.
Mrs Rew was among staff accompanying the group on the adventure weekend, which was a reward for pupils’ performance during the year.
It is understood she became the subject of a complaint about her behaviour in front of youngsters.
A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a 47-year-old woman has been charged in connection with an incident on September 21 at Lockerbie.”
The nature of the charge facing Mrs Rew has not been revealed by police. However, The Courier understands it does not relate to the supply of alcohol to minors.
