A Monifieth family are back in their home after being evacuated following a gas leak.
Christine Shirkey, 38, and her two young children, were forced to flee their property on Sunday after engineers discovered a gas leak.
Three other elderly residents were also forced to leave their homes in Grange Place when a strong smell of gas was detected.
Christine had just returned from a stay in hospital when she detected the faint smell of gas around noon.
A few hours later, after calling contractors SGN, she was forced to evacuate her home after gas workers said she had to leave for her own safety.
Christine said: “Throughout the day the smell of gas was getting stronger as it spread into the living room and the kitchen.”
Realising it was not her senses playing tricks on her, Christine turned off the gas supply, opened all the windows in the house and called the emergency hotline of her supplier, British Gas.
SGN arrived at her house within the hour to investigate.
“After an engineer took a reading, one of the workers told me that me and my children had to leave immediately,” said Christine.
As gas workers ripped up part of her driveway and garden to fix the leak, Christine and her children stayed with relatives.
They have now been allowed to return home after the leak was sealed.
Claire Buchanan, of SGN, said: “We are currently working on a 30-year gas mains replacement programme, agreed with the HSE, to replace old metal pipes with modern plastic polyethylene pipes.
“This is scheduled through a systematic process.”
