Don’t You Want Me? Human League’s Stonehaven concert is a slow-burner

While large crowds are expected at the Stonehaven fireballs ceremony, organisers fear the poor ticket sales for the music event starring the Human League could jeopardise future events.
While large crowds are expected at the Stonehaven fireballs ceremony, organisers fear the poor ticket sales for the music event starring the Human League could jeopardise future events.

Organisers behind Stonehaven’s Open Air in the Square party have admitted poor ticket sales could jeopardise future events.

With only one day to go there are still tickets left for one of the town’s marquee events starring 1980s pop icons the Human League.

Stonehaven expects thousands of spectators at the separate fireball ceremony in addition to those attending the programme of music in the square.

Volunteers have appealed for a benefactor or sponsor to help cover costs of the gig if there is no sell-out.

Committee members, family and friends have even come up with money from their own pockets to make sure the event goes ahead.

A spokesman for Open Air in the Square said: “Last year with Simple Minds we sold out in record time, but this year it has been a good bit slower.

“We have been selling tickets all over the UK, but for some unknown reason people in the immediate area have been holding off.

“We have provided brilliant Hogmanay fun for tens of thousands of revellers over the past few years and it would be a huge pity if we could not carry on through lack of support.”

Tickets are available at www.oaits.org and at Ma Simpson’s music shop in Evan Street, Stonehaven, where there is no booking fee.

They will also be available at Number 44, the Royal Hotel, Stonehaven.

Meanwhile, organisers of the fireballs ceremony said they are hoping for dry weather.

Chairwoman Susan Leiper said: “The lead-off swinger will be Maurice Coull who is very proud to be fulfilling his duty and has been a committee member in the past.”
