Shuttered Laurencekirk library building could be saved by community buyout

A Mearns community group has launched a bid to take over a building that was closed during recent cuts.
The Howe o’ the Mearns Heritage Trust is applying to purchase the former Laurencekirk library and Burgh building from Aberdeenshire Council.
It was one of several closed in the town following the opening of the new Mearns Academy community campus.
The new school was to have met the requirements for community groups but several have said the old buildings were better suited to their needs.
Mike Robson, of the Howe o’ the Mearns Heritage Trust, said: “Until its recent closure, five local groups made use of the meeting room and are interested in its development as the location for a wider range of community activities.”
Trust members are working on a design remit and any inquiries from community organisations and individuals are welcome.
