It’s one of the most famous water hazards in golf but now a new bridge is being built over the burn at Carnoustie’s 18th hole.
The new bridge is being installed at the rear of the white tee on the hole while the burn is being widened in front of Hogan tee to alleviate flooding.
The burn snakes round to in front of the 18th green of the Championship Course, scene of one of the most infamous meltdowns in golf history.
Needing just a six to win the 1999 Open, Frenchman Jean Van De Velde ended up carding a seven before losing the subsequent play-off to Paul Lawrie.
Head greenkeeper Craig Boath posted this picture of work starting on the new bridge this morning:
Carnoustie will host the Open for the eighth time in 2018.
Those who wants to relive Jean Van De Velde’s rush of blood to the head – or just remind themselves what not to do if they find the water on their approach to the green – can watch the clip below.
