A man who called an Angus shop worker a “nappy-heid terrorist” has been jailed for 40 days.
Christopher McReynolds thought he had been short-changed at the Forfar convenience store and went back to the shop to remonstrate with staff but when they told him he was wrong, he delivered a volley of racist abuse, which was captured on security cameras.
At the town’s sheriff court, 48-year-old McReynolds, formerly of Viewmount, Forfar, admitted acting in a racially-aggravated manner at the St James convenience store in St James Road on October 8 by repeatedly shouting racial and offensive remarks.
Fiscal depute Hannah Kennedy said the victim of McReynolds’ abuse is of Pakistani origin and was working in the shop when the accused came in at about 7.40pm, asked for change and then began to shout and swear.
Defence solicitor Hamish Watt said the accused’s version of events was that he had been into the shop earlier, thought he had been short-changed and after consuming alcohol, had gone back to complain.
“He accepts he lost control of himself and apologises,” said Mr Watt.
“He is now of no fixed abode and … while it may not be my normal mode, I ask for him to be given a custodial sentence.”
Meanwhile at Forfar, Kyle Fairweather, 34, of Lochlands Street, Arbroath, was ordered to pay his father £1,034 compensation, having previously admitted obtaining the money by means of a fraudulent internet banking scheme between February 9 and 22 last year. He also admitted breaching a previous community payback order.
Sheriff Gregor Murray told Fairweather: “You have what appears to me to be a short but fairly nasty criminal record. I will continue consideration of the CPO breach for three months and expect an updated report to show you have fully cooperated and everything is back on track.
“If it is not, you will be in deep, deep trouble.”
