New Kirriemuir post office ‘in wrong place’, says councillor

The Post Office has revealed its plans for the new Kirriemuir branch.

The counters in Reform Street will close on February 24, with the new service opening at newsagent Thistle News and Gifts, in the town’s High Street, at 1pm the following day.

The new service will be operated from two counters, where the Post Office terminals will sit alongside the till.

It will mean the branch is open for an additional 28 hours of business a week, including Sundays.

However, Councillor Ronnie Proctor has criticised the closure of the Reform Street branch, which has been part of the town for around 100 years.

He said: “The first thing to say is well done to Thistle News for taking the post office on.

“At least we still have a post office in the middle of the town.

“However, it is my view that it’s in the wrong place.

“It’s situated at a bad corner, a busy corner and I have concerns for elderly people crossing the road there.

“It’s also far too small.

“I visited the shop on Saturday and I think there will be queues out the door when it’s Christmas.

“There’s also very limited car parking in the surrounding area.”

The new opening hours will be 6am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday, 6.30am to 5.30pm on Saturday and 7am to 12.30pm on Sundays.

People will be able to use normal post services, buy travel money, send funds abroad using Moneygram, pay bills and withdraw money.

The Post Office’s regional manager, Suzanne Richardson, said: “We are confident that this vibrant new-style post office at the heart of the community will meet customer needs.

“This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office, and will secure services for the future.

“The investment marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”
