Montrose has been hailed as a town with living standards among the highest in the country.

The Angus town came sixth in a league of top seaside towns based on employment opportunities, the housing market, the environment, health and education.

“Most of us appreciate we have a wonderful town, with lots to offer, in a beautiful setting,” said Joan Stott, chairwoman of Montrose Community Council.

“It is wonderful to have this recognised. This is cause for celebration. Montrose people should be proud of themselves.

“Hopefully, this accolade will help attract a lot more visitors.”

According to the seaside town review by the Bank of Scotland, the advantage of Montrose is that it offers a high quality of life with relatively low house prices.

The average house price is put at £107,194.

The top 10 towns in the league are all on the east coast and the top three all in Aberdeenshire. These are listed as Fraserburgh, Peterhead and Stonehaven.

All three, the survey states, have higher than average weekly earnings compared to other seaside towns and a significantly above-average employment rate.

“They also have considerably lower-than-average traffic flows and burglary rates,” it states. “Rainfall is almost 25% lower than the average for all coastal towns, whilst they enjoy on average 45 minutes more sunshine per week.”

However, the downside for anybody considering relocating to Stonehaven is the cost of property, with the average house price of £184,996 making it the third most expensive seaside town in Scotland.

Nitesh Patel, housing economist at Bank of Scotland, said, “Living on the coast has many attractions, often including a high quality of life, good climate and the all important scenery.

“Given these attributes, seaside towns have long held a strong appeal for many homebuyers seeking an everyday view of the sea.

“Many seaside towns offer an excellent quality of life but with house prices to match. However, several seaside towns in Scotland provide a combination of relatively low property prices and a good quality of life, therefore offering good value for money.”
