A £257,000 contract to resurface Rossie Island Road and improve drainage at the southern entrance to Montrose is expected to take 10 weeks to complete.
Angus Council has said that the contract which consists of carriageway, drainage and footpath works will start on Monday. The footpath and drainage works will be carried out during the first eight weeks, with the separate installation of new street lighting already started.
Works will take place in the parking lane and there will be two-way traffic on the remainder of Rossie Island Road.
Work will start at Bridge End Garage towards the pedestrian crossing on the west side and then move along the site. No waiting cones and signs will indicate the sections to be worked on.
There will be no on-street parking within and opposite the works site.
During the carriageway works, which will start in mid-October, two-way or three-way traffic lights will be in operation and there will be no on-street parking. The work may require bus stops to be closed off and some temporary stops may be in operation.
Councillor Mark Salmond said that, as the previous ward councillor for the area, he had lobbied for the resurfacing and was delighted it was now top of the priority list.
“A major component of the work will be the new drainage system which will tackle the serious flooding that takes place at Bridge End Garage,” he said. “There have been a number of serious flooding incidents I am delighted that was taken into consideration when the plans were being prepared..”The road is one of the main gateways into the town and the work will bring long-term benefits to the south end of Montrose.”
The project will coincide with essential repairs and maintenance at the metal bridge over the railway line at Bridge of Dun. That work is due to get under way on September 13 and will take around nine weeks to complete.
During that time the road will be closed, with an alternative route marked for traffic and pedestrians.
