The A90 dual carriageway was closed in both directions following an early morning incident in Angus on Sunday.
Police said they had no option but to close both carriageways to deal with the situation.
At approximately 3.20am Tayside Police received a call raising concerns for a male on a bridge over the A90 at its junction with the A926 outside Forfar.
Officers attended and a man was found on the outside of the barrier on the bridge.
Motorists were diverted via the B9128 and the A926 to then rejoin the carriageway.
The man was negotiated to safety and the road was reopened to the public at 5.10am.
A spokesman said: ”Tayside Police would like to thank any members of the public affected for their patience in allowing them to deal with this incident and apologise for the unavoidable inconvenience.”
