150-year-old pound note makes a mint at auction

A 150-year-old Scottish bank note has been sold at auction for £400.

The Arbroath Banking Company one pound note went under the hammer at specialist currency auctioneers Spink in London.

The black and white note has engravings of Arbroath Abbey and the Bell Rock lighthouse and is dated December 22 1852.

It was described by auctioneers Spink as “fine and rare”.

However, the banknote was never issued to the public by the Arbroath Banking Company which also had branches in Forfar and Coupar Angus.

The bank was amalgamated into the Commercial Bank of Scotland in 1844.
