Pictish heritage of Angus to be explored this weekend

The Aberlemno Serpent Stone.
The Aberlemno Serpent Stone.

A new venture to generate interest in the ancient heritage of Angus will draw visitors to the county this weekend.

The Stories in the Stones will promote the magnificent carved symbol stones in the area around Aberlemno, with Pictish authority Norman Atkinson lending his expertise to the Sunday event organised by the local hall committee.

Mr Atkinson and enthusiasts will lead three themed walks which have been devised to deliver an insight into the area’s heritage, focusing on the area’s Pictish symbol stones and Aberlemno churchyard.

The other walks offer the opportunity to view the landscape surrounding the stones and a chance to visit Finavon hill fort.

Aberlemno hall will be open from 10.30am to provide refreshments throughout the day and an introductory talk by Mr Atkinson.

A number of Pictish-themed crafts and displays will also be on offer, with a barbecue available from lunch time.

The www.aberlemno.org has more information about the village, the timetable for the day and booking a place on the walk to Finavon, which must be done in advance.
