Officers are conducting interviews over the theft of nine catalytic converters, worth a total of £17,000, from vehicles at AM Phillips near Forfar. The business, at Muiryfaulds junction on the A90 dual carriageway, is split between truck and agricultural operations and opened in 1955. Details over when the thefts took place are scant, with reports varying between the weekend and Tuesday night. “This isn’t the sort of thing that you’d expect of a casual theft,” said Inspector Faulkner of Tayside Division. Police have asked anyone with information to call 101, quoting crime reference 19528/14 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. Thefts of catalytic converters from motor vehicles have more than doubled over the past four years. Almost 25,000 thefts were reported to police forces across the UK between 2010 and the first half of this 2013. Thieves are ripping out the devices because they contain precious metals such as platinum and palladium. The owners of the business were unavailable for comment.
