The granddaughter of one of the founders of Harley-Davidson motorbikes has visited her family’s ancestral home in Angus.
Jean Davidson, 77, travelled from Milwaukee, USA, with her son Jon Davidson Oeflein to pay tribute to her family’s roots at the Davidson Cottage at Aberlemno, near Brechin.
Alexander and Margaret Davidson lived in the modest two-bedroom cottage with their six children and two workers before leaving for Wisconsin in America in 1858 in search of more opportunities.
Three of their grandchildren Arthur, Walter, pictured above, and William along with Englishman Bill Harley would go on to found the famous motorcycle company in 1903. Two years ago work restoring the dilapidated cottage by motorcycle enthusiasts Maggie Sherrit, Mike Sinclair and Keith Mackintosh was completed.
Jean, Walter’s granddaughter, said: “It’s so nice to be here the stone on the cottage is beautiful.”
Jon said an engraved slate from the original roof of the cottage takes pride of place at the Harley-Davidson museum in Milwaukee.
He said: “We are very grateful for the wonderful job that Maggie, Mike and Keith have done preserving this piece of history which is important to me and my mum but also thousands of other Harley-Davidson enthusiasts.”
