A Mearns man has had “out of this world” interest in his Doctor Who home since it went on the market for £650,000.

The art deco property near Fordoun includes a hand-built replica of the time traveller’s seven-foot police call box.

It is the work of Tony Allen, a 51- year-old heating engineer, who built the Tardis as a “side project” after finishing the house.

Mr Allen said: “There has been so much interest in the property and it’s only been on the market for a day. It’s out of this world.”

Mr Allen added the idea for the sci-fi addition came to him “in the pub” around three years ago.

“I originally had an art deco post box and it stood 5ft tall by 3ft wide, but I was never keen on it, so I ended up smashing it up with a hammer,” he said.

“I then saw a black and yellow AA box at Luthermuir, but I didn’t think it would look good in the garden.

“It was a friend who said to me after the pub, ‘what about a Tardis?’

“A lot of the materials were left over from when I was building the house and the signs on it came from eBay.

“It took about six months to put together, but I think it has definitely been worthwhile.”

Mr Allen said the booth had become something of a tourist attraction.

“Delivery drivers usually take pictures of themselves in front of it because it is so unusual, and tourists have stopped to take selfies,” he said.

“Sometimes when people just see pictures of it online they think it has been Photoshopped in. They can’t believe it’s actually hand-made.”

He is looking forward to the challenge of building another unique home in the north-east but will not put his love of Doctor Who behind him.

Mr Allen, whose favourite incarnation of the Doctor is the one played by Christopher Eccleston, said: “I grew up in the Tom Baker era, so I’ve always had a soft spot for some of the older doctors.

“Peter Capaldi hasn’t delivered yet, but I live in hope.”
