A celebration has been held for two Angus athletes who helped the county “punch above its weight” on the world stage.

The council gave a civic reception for Commonwealth Games medal winners Darren Burnett and Drew Christie, hosted by Provost Helen Oswald.

Burnett completed a golden day for Scotland in July as he defeated Canada’s Ryan Bester 21-9 to win the men’s singles at the Commonwealth Games, while Drew Christie won Scotland’s first shooting medal of the 2014 Commonwealth Games by taking silver in the skeet.

Mrs Oswald welcomed the pair to the Canmore Rooms in Forfar.

She said: “These two amazingly dedicated sportsmen, both Angus born and bred, are fantastic ambassadors for the county. They have brought honour to their sports, to Scotland and to Angus.

“For a small local authority like Angus to have a gold and a silver medallist in the Games was certainly punching above our weight and we are all rightly proud of their achievements.

“I wish them both very well in the future.”

A police constable, Mr Burnett was given special dispensation to take part in the games after Police Scotland cancelled all leave for officers across the country for the duration of the event.

The 38-year-old world indoor champion duly paid it back, after the Scots had waited eight years for a Commonwealth gold medal.

He said previously: “The whole of the police have been behind me 100%, it’s been great.

“Arbroath Outdoor Bowling Club and Arbroath and District Indoor Bowling Club, where I have spent many years training for various competitions all over the world, have also been extremely supportive and encouraging throughout my sporting career.”

Mr Christie, 34, from Auchterhouse delighted the home crowd by reaching the gold-medal match.

Drew competed for Scotland in the skeet shooting at Barry Buddon.

He said: “It’s great. In Delhi I came fourth, so it was a really amazing to get the silver this year. The season is pretty much over so my win at the games was the best way to celebrate that.”
