Hope has emerged that Kirriemuir post office provision will be back in place within days.
As Voluntary Action Angus stepped in to provide lifeline transport for those affected by the sudden closure of the town’s Reform Street post office, Angus Council leader Iain Gaul said he had been told the firm was working “flat out” to reopen the counter.
That may happen as soon as Thursday, but in the meantime Mr Gaul praised the speed with which VAA had come to the rescue of customers, particularly the elderly, affected by the unexpected turn of events.
Kirrie post office provision is the subject of a public consultation, due to end early next month, over plans to relocate the service to Thistle News and Gifts in the town centre.
Residents were stunned by the sudden closure of the long-established Reform Street branch last week, a move which community leaders said has left people in the lurch.
Voluntary Action Angus chief executive Gary Malone described the situation as a “crisis” for post office regulars.
The charity has established twice daily runs, at 10am and 2pm, to Forfar or Westmuir post offices.
“This is a temporary situation and we have to do what’s best for people, therefore we will lay on mini-buses and volunteer car travel, free of charge for people who need to get their pensions or benefits,” said Mr Malone.
“It is ironic that this falls during anti-poverty week where we are already stretched to dealing with such issues, however the resilience and responsive nature of the voluntary sector always puts people at the heart of everyday action.”
He added: “I wish to thank Kirriemuir Community Council and Councillor Janette Gaul for assisting us with this response and our volunteer drivers who provide much needed support.”
Those wishing to access the service should contact (01307) 466113 or meet at the post office at 10am or 2pm.
Mr Malone said: “It is not a situation which anyone is happy about but I have been able to make contact with the Post Office and they have told me they are working flat out to reopen the branch.
“VAA reacted very quickly and after discussing the situation with Councillor Jeanette Gaul got transport arrangements sorted out in double quick time, for which many folk will be grateful,” he said.
