Post office services in Kirriemuir are to be restored.
The town’s Reform Street branch closed without warning more than a week ago after the Post Office decided to shut the shop.
Residents were stunned by the sudden closure, but the community council has now received official confirmation the premises will reopen on Tuesday.
Secretary Cathy Stephenson said Kirriemuir Community Council was in contact with the Post Office and with the policy team at Citizens Advice Scotland over an ongoing consultation to move Kirriemuir’s Post Office.
She told The Courier: “We have used those contacts to provide accurate and current updates to the community about the closure, primarily by Facebook, but also through notices at the Post Office itself.
“It has not been an easy week for Kirriemuir, but we were delighted that Voluntary Action Angus (VAA) were able to quickly mobilise volunteer drivers to help those left stranded by the unexpected Post Office closure and that community members circulated the information we were able to get.
“Earlier in the week we shared a message, through our Facebook page from Citizens Advice Scotland.”
Citizens Advice Scotland credited efforts as “amazing”.
Ms Stephenson added: “We appreciate everyone joining together so that community actions this week demonstrated the value of having a Post Office open in Kirriemuir now we need everyone to add their views to the current consultation.”
Post Office representatives are expected to attend the community council’s next meeting at 7.30pm on October 29.
Councillor Iain Gaul, who aided the community efforts in arranging the minibus service, said: “It’s now official.
“I’m disappointed we had to go through this shambles, and it would have been nice if the Post Office had told us about it first, but we put things in place with VAA to help out and now we can move forward.
“We now look to the consultation and the people of Kirriemuir having their voice heard.”
Copies of the questionnaire were handed out in the town at the weekend and will also be distributed to organisations and businesses to pass on.
