A Carnoustie man admitted letting his car roll down a hill while a woman was clinging to the bonnet.
Sean Paul Beattie then slammed on the brakes, injuring the screaming woman as she fell to the road.
At Forfar Sheriff Court, the 23-year-old, of Kinloch Street, admitted reckless behaviour on August 3 in the town’s Taymouth Street.
Depute fiscal Hannah Kennedy said a member of the public had been alerted to the offence when they became aware of a woman screaming.
“The woman was found lying in front of the accused’s vehicle and they thought she had been run over,” she said.
“Inquiries were made by the police and it became clear the complainer didn’t wish a police investigation and she initially refused to cooperate.
“However, the complainer’s friend gave a full statement to police. The accused was traced and admitted the offence.”
She said Beattie and the complainer had been drinking the previous evening and had ended up with each other’s phone by mistake.
“Beattie agreed to come to the complainer’s flat to pick up his phone,” she continued.
“The complainer came downstairs to speak to the accused and got into the back of the accused’s car.
“She started pulling at his clothing so much so that Beattie’s T-shirt was ripped off him.
“She wouldn’t leave the accused’s vehicle and he agreed to take her away and drop her at her mother’s house.
“When they were near to the house, the complainer was still pulling at him while he was driving.
“He stopped the vehicle and was able to get her out.
“She then jumped on the vehicle’s bonnet and held on to the windscreen wipers. The accused then committed the act he is charged with.”
Defence agent Bob Bruce said Beattie had initially put on the windscreen wipers in the hope she would get off the car.
He said: “He released the handbrake for about 5ft and then put his feet on the brakes.
“At that point he had been attacked for around 15 minutes. At that stage I think many of us would be wondering what to do next.”
Sheriff Gregor Murray fined Beattie £100.
