A man was sentenced to 10 months in prison for breaking into an Angus commercial garage.
John McGrandle, from Dundee, removed a pane of glass from an external door before he took almost £6,000 worth of goods from Autosales in Kirriemuir on February 5.
The 22-year-old was identified by police through CCTV footage.
McGrandle, formerly of Nithsdale Avenue, appeared from custody at Forfar Sheriff Court facing an indictment alleging he broke into the showroom and stole jewellery and watches, mp3 players, mobile phones, cigarettes and other items.
Depute fiscal Donna Brown said the goods were valued at £5,937.
She said: “The locus is Autosales, a commercial premises the property was secured by staff at 11pm on the evening of February 4.
“Police officers were called to attend at 1.15am the next day as a result of an alarm activation. They found a glass panel had been removed from a door.
“When the key holder arrived, it was evident a break-in had taken place.”
McGrandle was identified as the perpetrator and Ms Brown added: “When interviewed by police officers he made no comment.”
A not guilty plea from McGrandle’s co-accused, Alexander Sangster from Dundee, was accepted by the Crown.
Defending McGrandle, solicitor Jim Laverty said his client had “indicated at a fairly early stage” that he would plead guilty.
“Your lordship has seen the previous convictions,” he added. “We accept custody is inevitable in this particular case.
“Because of his record, because of the seriousness of the offence, your lordship may only have one option.
“He spent a week in custody over this matter back in February.”
“He has had the opportunity to contemplate where his life is going he is in a relationship and he hopes, on his release, that it will not have floundered.
“My client is not a stupid man he understands his difficulty is idleness. He makes no effort through me to minimise responsibility for this or to blame others.”
Sheriff Pino di Emidio sentenced McGrandle to 10 months’ imprisonment, reduced from 15 months due to an early plea.
