A banned driver was caught behind the wheel by CCTV cameras before claiming to police he was being driven by his girlfriend.
Sean Dunn, from Forfar, had no licence when he drove home from Sainsbury’s supermarket in Dundee on June 22.
After being tipped off by another motorist, police viewed footage taken by the supermarket’s CCTV cameras and this showed the 25-year-old driving a black Toyota Starlet.
Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said the accused had appeared at court on March 11 for a driving offence and was disqualified until March next year.
“The accused is the boyfriend of witness Jade Ducat and the owner of the vehicle,” she said.
“At 11.30am on June 22 a witness was driving his vehicle and observed a vehicle travelling behind him.
“He recognised (the accused), he had some concerns and he pulled over and contacted the police while the accused kept driving on the Kellas Road.”
After the police checked the partial registration, they found the only possible car was registered to the accused and they went to his home.
Ms Ducat came to the door and said she had just returned home with Dunn.
Ms Drummond added: “Further inquiries resulted in officers visiting the petrol garage at Sainsbury’s and looking at footage.
“The CCTV clearly showed the accused to be the driver and witness Ducat the passenger.”
Defending Dunn, solicitor Bob Bruce admitted previous convictions and added: “He accepts there is no fanciful excuse. He accepts he shouldn’t have been driving.”
Sentence was deferred until January 15 and bail was continued.
Sheriff Pino Di Emidio said: “Given the nature of the charges to which you’ve pleaded guilty, I’m going to defer sentence for the preparation of criminal justice social work reports.”
Dunn, of Kirkton Place, admitted driving a car while disqualified on Tom Johnstone Road, Dundee, and the B978 near Kellas and Forfar on June 22, while uninsured to drive a car.
He further admitted falsely stating to PCs Barry Stewart and Cameron Shearer that Jade Ducat was driving on the date in question, in order to avoid prosecution with intent to pervert the course of justice and breaking bail conditions on June 23.
