Angus Olympic star Greg Drummond fulfilled a pledge to the Prime Minister when he took his tale of Sochi glory to college.
In an event at Arbroath’s Saltire sports centre, Team GB men’s curling silver medallist Greg shared his story with Dundee and Angus College sports students, and related how much life had changed since the Winter Olympics.
He said: “My life has changed dramatically since the win. Nothing really prepares you for the public attention and some of the wonderful opportunities that come your way.”
In addition to television appearances, including a Sport Relief event with Lord Coe, and a visit as a guest of honour to the Ibrox home of his football favourites, Rangers, Greg was also part of the Winter Olympics contingent that was invited along to No 10 Downing Street.
“One of the things the Prime Minister encouraged us to do was go out into the schools and colleges and encourage young people, so it’s great to be able to do this here,” Greg said.
“We had a couple of weeks off after the Olympics, but have been back training and are now preparing for the European finals in Switzerland and then the play-off finals in Canada, which is the last Grand Slam event.”
Greg spoke to the students from across the college sports courses at the request of his former conditioning coach and college lecturer, Chris Simpson.
Chris said: “It’s a fantastic insight for students to meet a local Olympian and to hear first-hand about his achievement, his work ethic and his commitment.
“We have some talented athletes at the college and it’s inspiring for them to hear about Greg’s experiences and how he was able to rely on support networks like Sport Scotland to help him achieve his dream.”
