Beach walkers were left perplexed at the weekend after a navigational buoy washed up on the Angus shore.
The marine marker was spotted on the rocks at Easthaven on Saturday morning.
Residents called the police and coastguard to notify them of their find.
It later emerged that the buoy belonged to Forth and Tay Navigation Service and had broken free from its mooring at the Tay Estuary.
A spokesman for the company said: “Our buoy maintenance contractors are arranging recovery of the buoy and will be reinstating it at its normal location.”
