Montrose Royal British Legion has organised a series of events to raise funds to repair a leaking roof that could leave the charity penniless.
The Courier revealed last month that the flat roof at the branch’s Wellington Street premises was continuing to cause difficulties, with quotes to solve the problem ranging from £5,800 to £10,500.
The high cost of the repair, together with low membership levels, has caused a grave financial problem.
Branch official Ian Robb said: “Never let it be said that trained British servicemen and women lie down in the face of adversity, unless to face a frontal attack. We in Montrose are not facing a frontal attack, we are making one.
“In February we faced up to structural problems to our club rooms, which we are determined to progress and overcome, but we need the community support to help us turn things around.”
On March 22 a coffee morning will be held at Columba Halls in Montrose’s Market Street from 10am to noon.
On April 19 there will be a dance event at the Legion clubrooms, starting at 8pm. Tickets, priced £2.50, are available on the door. There will also be a Legion presence at Montrose Gala Day on July 19, including a gala dance in the clubrooms in the evening, with tickets going on sale soon.
