Missing Alan Kelly: police stay hopeful

Alan Kelly.

Family and friends of a missing Angus man are clinging to the hope he will soon be found safe and well.

It is now more than three weeks since the last sighting of Arbroath 47-year-old Alan Kelly.

The whereabouts of the former teacher remain a complete mystery, despite a public appeal and nationwide police inquiries.

A major search effort was launched in the aftermath of his disappearance on February 20.

Although the inquiry has so far failed to reveal his whereabouts or provide a firm lead, a police officer at the forefront of the investigation said Mr Kelly’s extensive network of associates could have taken him anywhere in the country.

Concerns for his welfare were raised by family members after he was last seen returning to his sister’s house on the morning of Thursday February 20.

He had been acting out of character and the immediate search effort included a sweep of the coastline near the town, involving the RNLI and coastguard.

CCTV at bus and train stations has also been studied but Sergeant George Smith admitted few clues had emerged in the hunt for Mr Kelly.

“We remain extremely concerned for Alan’s safety and wellbeing and are still hopeful of getting information,” he told The Courier.

Mr Kelly is around 5ft 9in, of stocky build and with short dark brown hair, beginning to grey.

He usually wore a wool tammy and when last seen was wearing a black jacket, brown trousers and brown boots.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or speak to any officer.
