Brechin bid for £12 million Government flood grant

An annuncement will be made “in due course” on an application for flood prevention cash for Brechin.

Angus Council has applied for more than £12 million of capital grant cash from the Scottish Government for the project.

Councillor Bob Myles said: “I have been waiting for about 20 years for this to happen so hopefully the funding can be secured.

“The council has already put £2m into the scheme.To spend that amount of money without a single barrier being put up is risky.”

Construction work is due to start in January next year.

The planned scheme, involving direct defences, flood embankments and flood walls, covers four areas in the town River Street, Inch play park, East Mill and Ladeside Road.

An Angus Council spokeswoman said: “We have received positive feedback from the Scottish Government on our application and are awaiting final confirmation of the grant award.”

A Scottish Government spokesman said: “We have received a number of applications for funding of new flood protection schemes. An announcement will be made in due course.”
