Work to clear up wartime explosives in Montrose to finish soon
ByThe Courier Reporter
Clearance work on an Angus site where potentially live grenades were discovered is expected to be completed next week.
Work is ongoing at the Charleton Road site in Montrose as part of unexploded ordnance clearance work by GE Oil and Gas ahead of a £9 million expansion.
Neil Gazeley, GE Oil and Gas Subsea Systems communications leader, said: “The currently undeveloped grassland forms part of a former Royal Air Force Airfield (RAF Montrose) and a recent survey of the site indicated the possibility of buried ordnance.
“GE Oil and Gas has engaged specialist contractors to deal with the clearance work and they are working with Police Scotland.”
Mr Gazeley said an exclusion zone remains around the find area and clearance work is expected to be completed within the next few days.
Any findings of military interest are being offered to the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre.
