Usan Salmon Fisheries decides on non-lethal alternative to Ythan seal cull

A Tayside fishery has been praised for its decision to abandon a proposed seal cull.
Usan Salmon Fisheries of Montrose had applied to Marine Scotland for a licence to shoot seals on the Ythan Estuary north of Aberdeen but has withdrawn the application.
Director George Pullar said the firm has opted to use non-lethal means to protect fish stock.
“We plan to use acoustic seal deterrent devices at the Ythan,” he said.
“This equipment is non-lethal and is widely used successfully throughout Scotland as a measure to deter seals from entering fresh water.”
Stop the Ythan Cull campaigner Victor Beattie said he was pleased to hear of the move but said he may question the firm further.
