An Angus man who stole a bottle of Buckfast was jailed for six months on Saturday by Sheriff Kevin Veal.
Richard Martin, 34, of River Street, Brechin, appeared from custody at a special Easter sitting of Arbroath Sheriff Court.
He admitted stealing the tonic wine from Brechin Paytime Express on Swan Street on Friday while on bail.
He further admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner in the rear of a police vehicle from Montrose Street, Brechin, to Arbroath Police Station.
Martin shouted, swore and repeatedly struck his hands and head on the inside of the vehicle and acted in an aggressive manner towards officers.
Procurator fiscal Craig Harris said Martin had walked into the shop and asked the sales assistant if he could buy alcohol on credit.
The sales assistant refused and Martin took a bottle of Buckfast from the shelf, opened it, took a drink and walked out.
Police later found him after receiving a report of a male lying in the street intoxicated and unable to walk.
Jailing him for six months, Sheriff Veal said: “I accept he has an alcohol problem but the only way shopkeepers will get any respite from his activities is if I put him out of circulation for some time.”
