Lifeboats launched after reports of person falling off Arbroath cliffs
ByGraham Brown
Both Arbroath lifeboats have been launched following reports of a person falling into the water at Seaton Cliffs.
The alarm was raised at 14.08pm on Monday, leading to the launch of the ILB and then the all-weather Inchcape.
A spokesman for HM Coastguard said the call-out was made to rescue someone in the water, but they were unable to confirm the exact location of the incident.
The lifeboats returned to station after a short time, but it is understood the alert related to a suspected ‘tombstoning’ incident in the Seaton Cliffs area, north of the town.
An ambulance was called to the scene to deal with a casualty who is not believed to have sustained serious injury.
The sheer sandstone cliffs are a popular spot for the practice, which involves participants jumping into the water from what can sometimes be a significant height.
Previous tombstoning incidents have prompted coastguard warnings over the danger posed to those taking part.
