Police drive home safety message to motorists outside Angus primaries

The first day of a police road safety crackdown outside Angus primary schools resulted in officers targeting inconsiderate drivers.

Birkhill and Eassie primaries are being targeted in the operation, and one Birkhill driver received a fixed penalty notice after she parked in a bus bay, making it impossible for the school bus to drop off and pick up children safely.

The community officer for the Sidlaws area, PC Sean Scanlon, has been working with the school to deal with problem parkers for months, and said while the situation is improving people are still putting children at risk by parking dangerously.

He said: “Today was quite successful. We don’t want to go straight down the enforcement route, but we make no apologies for doing that with repeat offenders.

“Most parents have been taking on board what we tell them, but sadly there are still a number of parents who choose to ignore the legislation when I’m not there.”

Outside Eassie Primary, officers used speed guns to prevent drivers racing straight through the 20mph zone.

PC Scanlon added: “The issue in Eassie is more of a driving issue than a parking one. It is a straight road and people just travel straight through without slowing down for the 20mph school zone.

“The majority of parents have been encouraging. What we are trying to do is improve road safety because we don’t want anything to happen to people’s kids.

“Hopefully after this week of action the rest of them will get the message that this won’t be tolerated.”
