Angus restaurateur Iain Horn, who established the But ‘n’ Ben in Auchmithie in 1976, has died aged 77.
Mr Horn was born in Edinburgh and attended George Heriot’s School before working in insurance with Guardian Royal Exchange.
His 34 years of employment with the firm was interrupted by two years of national service with the RAF when he was posted to Glasgow in 1957.
There he met his wife-to-be, Margaret, and they had four children.
The But ‘n’ Ben was established in 1976 when they turned their holiday home in Auchmithie into a caf and crafts shop.
The demand for Mrs Horn’s cooking gradually led to the craft shop being sidelined. Mr and Mrs Horn retired in 2008 and the restaurant is continued by son Angus and his wife Margo.
Mr Horn had a passion for sport and played scrum-half for Heriot’s 1st XV, travelled to Wales to represent RAF Scotland and played for Panmure RC until he was 40.
He was a member of Forfar Golf Club and a keen curler.
He is survived by his wife, children Gillean, Angus, Emma and Ralph and seven grandchildren.
