Carnoustie is looking forward to staging the biggest show in golf, after the R&A confirmed The Open will return there in 2018.

Five-time Open champion Tom Watson joined the R&A for the announcement, when he also named Royal Birkdale as the venue for 2017.

The US Ryder cup captain won two of his titles at the courses Carnoustie in 1975 and Birkdale in 1983.

The news predicted last month in The Courier is a major boost for Carnoustie and the wider area, and will bring millions of pounds to the local economy.

Carnoustie Golf Links chairman Pat Sawers said: “We are very much looking forward to welcoming the Open Championship back for an eighth time to the historic links at Carnoustie in 2018 and feel sure the championship will generate just as much interest and excitement as in previous years.

“We believe the fact the R&A has invited us to stage the 2018 championship will provide a big boost to golf in the local area and will have a beneficial effect on our ongoing efforts to attract more local youngsters into the game.”

It will be the eighth time Carnoustie has hosted The Open and the first since Padraig Harrington lifted the Claret Jug there in 2007.

Carnoustie was also the venue for one of the championship’s most dramatic finishes when home favourite Paul Lawrie capitalised on Jean Van de Velde’s collapse to claim a famous victory in 1999.

The championship will be at Carnoustie from July 19-22 2018 and will be the third Scottish event in four years. The Open will be at St Andrews in 2015 and stay in Scotland at Royal Troon the following year.
