A record-breaking entry will be rolling up to Glamis Castle this weekend for a triple birthday bash in the spectacular setting.
The Angus landmark will welcome 1,400 vintage vehicles of all types for the perennially popular Scottish Transport Extravaganza and have promised plenty to see for an anticipated crowd of around 15,000 people over Saturday and Sunday.
The 40th anniversary event organised by enthusiasts of the Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club and the group shares its birthday with the Vintage Motorcycle Club and the Scottish Vintage Vehicle Federation, which is also bringing its Champion of Champions event to Glamis.
The winner of that crown is selected from some 200 entries which go out to winners of concourse events across the country, with over 20 category trophies.
Lesley Munro, the vintage club administrator, said the weekend has all the makings of being a memorable anniversary event as she accepted a £5,000 community grant cheque from Angus councillor Mairi Evans which will help the club fund the main-ring Jason Smyth adrenaline tour motorcycle stunt show.
“We are literally full up, with 1,400 entries and 45 car clubs, and even this week I am having to turn latecomers away,” she said.
“As well as entries from all over Scotland, we have people driving from Birmingham and across from Ireland so it is looking like a record year.”
SVVC chairman Allan Burt said: “Last year we had around 15,000 visitors over the two days, but when you also add on the competitors that probably means another couple of thousand people.”
Councillor Evans said: “It is fantastic that we have been able to support the event. It’s on a huge scale and I hope people come out and enjoy it.”
The club is also proud to be staging the largest display of Shanks stationary engines ever assembled in honour of the famous Arbroath firm, including a huge 1926 machine which SVVC member Kevin Rae has spent countless hours restoring.
Away from horsepower, man’s best friend will take centre stage on Saturday with a repeat of a dog show featuring 25 classes of all kinds and a come and try agility competition.
The show is being run to raise funds for Scottish Dogue De Bordeaux Support, a breed rescue endorsed by the Kennel Club.
