Cally Simpson has managed to breathe on her own for the longest time since she was found floating in a Spanish swimming pool.
The Arbroath four-year-old has been in a coma for two weeks after she was saved from a pool at the Villa Marina resort hotel in Salou, on the Costa Dorada in Spain.
Her dad Steven Simpson and mum Kate Miller revealed the youngster had managed to breathe on her own for three hours.
In a post on the Saving Cally Simpson Facebook page, Kate said: “This morning the doctor switched off Cally’s respirator as they were helping her a wee bit to breathe, our wee fighter managed to breathe on her own for three hours.
“We were told the other day that they weren’t sure if her brain would be able to send the message to her lungs to do so but, hey, she’s done it.”
In a later post, Steven also reported the little girl squeezing his finger.
“Cally just proper squeezed my hand as if to say daddy get that nurse off me!” he posted.
The youngster’s parents, who have been keeping a vigil by her hospital bedside in Spain, were last week given the heartbreaking news her brain could be “really damaged”.
Hopes had been raised the tot could soon wake up but doctors warned there were fears about her condition.
She was staying with her father and 11 other relatives when she fell into the pool.
Cally was rushed to an intensive care ward at a children’s hospital in Barcelona where she has remained in a coma ever since.
