Arbroath drinkers warned to clean up their act

Residents are being left to clean up after others have a heavy night out.
Residents are being left to clean up after others have a heavy night out.

Arbroath drinkers who end up urinating or being sick outside people’s homes have been warned they will be fined by police.

Police have vowed to dish out on-the-spot fines after neighbours said they were finally at their wits’ end.

Angry residents say they have to put up with drinkers urinating or being sick outside their homes every weekend.

North East MSP Alex Johnstone said the police attention appeared to be “long overdue”.

“Residents are right to be angry about this kind of disgusting and unacceptable behaviour,” he said.

“I welcome the fact that culprits may be hit by a fixed penalty fine, and hope that this proves to be a deterrent.

“However, given the effects on householders, police focusing attention on these offenders does seem to be a long overdue move.”

The police warning follows anger from neighbours in the Millgate area about the knock-on effect of kicking out time in pubs and clubs.

Many neighbours in the area say they regularly have to put up with drinkers relieving themselves outside their homes at the weekend.

Men and women have been seen by residents urinating in their gardens, against their wheelie bins and even on their front door.

They say they regularly have to go out the next day and mop up urine or sick following another boozy weekend in the town.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police in Angus regularly patrol areas near licensed premises, engaging with the public and such premises to keep people safe and to reduce anti-social activity.

“Officers would ask that people have consideration for local residents and advise that anyone who is found urinating in a public place may be issued with a fixed penalty notice.

“Anyone who wishes to report incidents of anti-social behaviour should contact Police Scotland on 101 or their local authority.”

Many of the residents did not wish to speak for fear of reprisals but Ian Adair, 49, called for more to be done by police.

He said: “This is something that’s been ongoing for the past two years and I’m at my wits’ end. People are coming out of the pubs at closing and hanging about the streets.

“They walk along the road and urinate on people’s property. It’s just a disgrace. We’ve had to clean sick and urine off our front and back doors.”

Mr Adair, a milkman and part-time bus driver, said he has taken the issue up with housing and the police but it keeps happening.

He also made a bid to get CCTV installed but could not get the agreement of all neighbours.

Mr Adair said his family are unable to relax at the weekend as they are just waiting on something to happen, adding: “I was brought up to show respect. I just wish they would go to the toilet before they leave.

“We need more police on the beat at closing time to stop this from happening. They stand outside the nightclub at 2am but they aren’t here when we really need them.”
