Arbroath girl Cally Simpson has battled a chest infection and virus as she fights for life in hospital after a swimming pool accident in Spain.
Cally’s parents said she was beating both of them and doctors at Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children are pleased with her progress.
Dad Steven and mum Kate Miller have been staying by her bedside and updated followers on the Saving Cally Simpson Facebook page.
They wrote: “Over the past weeks Cally had picked up a chest infection and a virus so we stopped visitors but she’s now beating both of them.
“We are hoping to get her off her ventilation within the next week as the doctors are pleased with her progress.”
The four-year-old had been on her first foreign holiday with her family when tragedy struck at the Villa Marina resort in Salou on June 23.
She spent three weeks in hospital in Spain before being flown home by air ambulance but has not regained consciousness.
The four-year-old’s family were told by specialists in Barcelona that it was “improbable” that she would ever wake from her coma. However, the pair cling to hope that she will pull through.
Cally was resuscitated by hotel staff and holidaymakers after being found in an adult pool.
The accident sparked a desperate struggle by Cally’s mum to get to Spain, with her efforts to rush to her daughter’s side blocked by a French air traffic controllers’ strike.
Well over £2,600 has already been raised for the family through events such as an online auction, a night of mediumship and a fun day. The money will be put in a fund which has been set up for future use by the family depending on their needs.
The family have already thanked the Arbroath community for its overwhelming support. Dozens of messages continue to be sent by well-wishers on the Saving Cally Simpson Facebook page.
The family have also received a boost from River City star Carmen Pieraccini who visited Cally.
The actress, who plays Kelly Marie, also signed a card for Cally during a visit to entertain sick children with the Hearts and Minds charity.
