A final push to transform tennis courts in Angus into a six-figure, state-of-the-art venue has been launched.
Arbroath Lawn Tennis Club wants to rip up the three clay courts and replace them with artificial courts and floodlights.
The move would allow tennis to be played all year round and the club, which is a registered charity, is well on its way to achieving its £180,000 target.
Fundraising, grants and pledges have already been made following four years of hard work but the club is still around £30,000 short.
Work could start as early as next March if they can raise the deficit, with a Just Giving page and text link now set up to take donations.
Treasurer and club stalwart Jan Fairlie said: “Our season runs from March until October but an artificial surface would allow us to stay open all year round.
“A state-of-the-art facility would be a great asset for Arbroath and will allow us to do even more good work in the community.
“Our courts are so under-utilised just now and I’m a great believer that tennis should be open to everyone.
“People in the Arbroath area are known as generous folk and we’ve already got fundraising events on the calendar.
“We would hope to start the work in March but that all depends on how the fundraising goes.”
The club, which was founded in 1909, has 110 members and also works closely with schools.
The artificial surface would allow it to extend its reach even further and eventually employ a full-time coach.
The Arbroath club has already helped bring through 19-year-old starlet Jonny O’Mara and is hopeful of lending a guiding hand to more budding young stars in the years to come.
A fashion show has been organised for September to help bring the dream closer to reality, with more events on the horizon in the coming months.
