Winter Olympics star Greg Drummond is to play a part in this month’s Angus Rotary Marafun.
The GB men’s curling team Sochi silver medallist will be back home for the Sunday May 25 event in Forfar, and Marafun convener Dave Valentine said he hoped Greg’s appearance would be of great interest to runners and spectators alike.
“I can’t think of a better tribute to Greg than letting the Marafun crowds give him a real Angus welcome back to his home town of Forfar,” he said.
Angus Provost Helen Oswald, who will officially open the Marafun and start the countdown for the main race, said: “Greg is a fantastic ambassador for his sport and for Angus, so it’s great that he’s able to join us at the Marafun.
“He’ll get a great reception from his home crowd and I’m sure his stunning Olympic success will help spur on our competitors.”
Greg said: “It’s been my toughest curling season ever so it will be good to finally come back home and meet up with many old friends whom I will be cheering on as they take part in some of the event.”
There will be three zones in this year’s Marafun, the main run zone circuit along East and West High Street, a fun zone with street entertainment, stands and catering around the municipal buildings on Castle Street, and an inaugural sports zone at the Myre.
The Ninewells Cancer Campaign is the main Marafun charity.
Mr Valentine added: “Many people have wanted to enter Marafun but are afraid of the distance involved.
“This isn’t a race, it’s just for fun and we would like people entering to come along in fancy dress, carry balloons and just enjoy the experience.”
